Rockets Appear to Hint at Return of Hakeem Olajuwon-Era Uniforms in Teaser Video

The Houston Rockets seemingly hinted at a return to uniform designs from the Hakeem Olajuwon era in a video shared Wednesday on social media.

The Rockets shared a video of a classic being ordered at a diner with the caption, "Coming soon."

The video was posted one day after the Rockets shared images of Kevin Durant and Alperen Şengün's silhouettes in front of yellow backgrounds.

SportsLogos.net's Andrew Lind noted this could hint at a return of the team's previous "ketchup and mustard" color scheme, which was featured on Rockets jerseys from 1972 to 1995.

That spanned Olajuwon's first 11 seasons with the team, a run the Rockets capped off with back-to-back championships in 1994 and 1995.

The Rockets then introduced a new primary logo and color scheme ahead of Olajuwon's 12th season with the team in 1995-96.

The team hasn't been back to the NBA Finals since taking the mustard accents out of their primary uniform lineup.

Despite adding Durant last offseason, the Rockets conceded a second consecutive first-round exit following a six-game loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in April.

The Rockets last updated their uniforms ahead of the 2019-20 season, when the team introduced a more minimalistic wordmark to the front of the jerseys and added side panels to the shorts the franchise said were meant to look like a rocket launch.

That season, the Rockets alsofeatured the ketchup and mustard color scheme as a special "classic" edition of the uniform in honor of the 25th anniversary of the 1995 championship team.

The Rockets could be hoping bringing a yellow color scheme back into the team's uniform lineup will help spark more playoff success after this year's disappointing first-round loss.

With Fred VanVleet potentially set to return from his torn ACL next season should he activate his player option or re-sign in Houston, the Rockets could be hoping another strong season and healthier playoff run from Durant alongside some offseason roster tweaks could help make this team a contender in 2027.
