Wemby Calls Out Spurs' Turnovers in Game 2 Loss amid Castle's Struggles After Fox, Harper Injuries
The San Antonio Spurs were without star point guard De'Aaron Fox in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, and they lost Dylan Harper halfway through Wednesday's contest.
The two guards' absences were felt as the Spurs struggled to take care of the ball, and Stephon Castle's 20 turnovers through the first two games of the series have only added salt to the wound.
Star center Victor Wembanyama was blunt when asked how the Spurs fared without two key guards.
"Not well," Wembanyama told reporters. "We've got to help our ball handlers more and take care of the ball."
The Spurs ended the night with 21 turnovers, compared to just nine by the Thunder. Castle was responsible for nine of those turnovers as the second-year player recorded 25 points and eight assists.
Castle has 19 assists to go along with his 20 turnovers through the first two games of the series. There should be some grace for Castle since he's playing in his first-ever playoffs and is only 21 years old, but San Antonio needs him to make smarter decisions to avoid the careless mistakes he's made early on.
Castle isn't the only Spur to blame for the turnovers, as all but two players who entered the game turned the ball over at least once. Wembanyama had the second-most of the night with four turnovers.
The fast-paced Thunder made the Spurs pay, as they scored 27 points off turnovers.
Fox suffered a high ankle sprain in Game 4 of the conference semifinals against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He managed to play in Games 5 and 6 of that series but was unable to suit up for the start of the conference finals.
Fox attempted to go through pregame workouts, but was ruled out about an hour before tip.
The rookie Harper, who had 24 points, 11 boards, six assists and seven steals in Game 1, suffered a right hamstring injury in the third quarter. He had 12 points at the time of his exit.
The Spurs are still very much in the series thanks to a win in Game 1, but things will be incredibly difficult moving forward if Fox, Harper or both are unable to return soon.
