Could LeBron James return home for a third time?

There is much speculation about his future and where he might play in the 2026-27 season, if he chooses to continue playing at all. One team that will always be linked to James is the Cleveland Cavaliers, and on Wednesday he liked an Instagram post urging him to return to the organization.

Getting to Cleveland will likely require James to either take a serious pay cut—barring a sign-and-trade that the Los Angeles Lakers agree to—or some very creative accounting from the Cavaliers, who are currently slated to be just above the second apron for next season. Evan Mobley and Donovan Mitchell will make $50.1 million apiece next season, James Harden has a $42.3 million player option he'd be wise to exercise and Jarrett Allen is on the books for $28 million.

The Cavs have a very expensive roster, in other words, and bringing aboard King James would require some outgoings. If Cleveland can't get over the hump and reach the NBA Finals this season, however, one final reunion with James—who is still playing at a very high level after averaging 20.9 points and 7.2 assists this past season—would make sense, however complicated it would be to pull off.
