Wemby Reacts to Spurs' 2OT Win vs. Thunder, 'We're Just Built Like This'
The San Antonio Spurs put together a breathtaking performance during Monday's dramatic 122-115 double-overtime victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, and star big man Victor Wembanyama knew they were capable of doing just that.
"Everybody answered the call," he said on the NBC broadcast. "We had to cover for our guy, Fox. … We're just built like this."
Even with De'Aaron Fox sidelined by injury, San Antonio managed to steal home-court advantage from the reigning champions in one of the most memorable NBA games in recent history.
Wembanyama unsurprisingly led the way with 41 points, 24 rebounds and three blocks on 14-of-25 shooting from the field and 1-of-2 shooting from deep. That one three-pointer was arguably the biggest shot of the evening, as he pulled up from well beyond the arc and drained a game-tying triple that eventually forced the double-overtime.
Dylan Harper also notched a double-double of 24 points, 11 rebounds and six assists as one of six as one of six Spurs to score in double figures.
The night belonged to Wembanyama, though, and he was the best player on the floor even going against the back-to-back MVP in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
All the pressure now shifts to Oklahoma City for Wednesday's Game 2, as it cannot afford to lose another one at home before the series shifts to San Antonio. The Thunder figure to bounce back in front of their fans after dropping the opener, but that is much easier said than done when Wembanyama is on the other side.
