Ayo Dosunmu, Wolves Reportedly Agree to New Contract After Julius Randle Trade, Updated Salary Cap

Joseph ZuckerJun 22, 2026

The Minnesota Timberwolves made sure not to lose guard Ayo Dosunmu after he became a valuable role player in the second half of the 2025-26 season.

The two sides agreed to a five-year, $112 million contract, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.

Wolves Shed $36M with Trade 👀

The deal comes shortly after the Wolves traded Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets in a three-team trade, a move that saved them roughly $36 million.

The Wolves made a sizable short-term upgrade when they acquired Dosunmu ahead of the 2026 trade deadline.

Perhaps Rob Dillingham emerges over time as a player who can help a contending team, but he played just 9.3 minutes per contest in 35 appearances with Minnesota through the first half. Dosunmu proved to be far more suited to the franchise's current timeline.

The 26-year-old averaged 14.4 points on 52.1 percent shooting, including 41.4 percent from three-point range, along with 3.5 assists. He was also massive in the first-round playoff series against the Denver Nuggets, putting up 21.8 points per game in six appearances.

In terms of the bigger picture, getting outclassed by the San Antonio Spurs in the second round has raised some uncomfortable questions in Minneapolis. The supporting cast around star Anthony Edwards isn't good enough to win a title right now, and the Victor Wembanyama-led Spurs aren't going anywhere. The same goes for the Oklahoma City Thunder with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren.

Maybe small tweaks around the margins are all that's needed, as long as Minnesota can be healthier come playoff time. Others will float the idea of a blockbuster trade for a marquee name such as Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Dosunmu is a prime example of how the front office has successfully achieved the former. Before he arrived, Nickeil Alexander-Walker thrived in the Timberwolves' backcourt. Alexander-Walker was so good he basically became too expensive for them to keep around.

President of basketball operations Tim Connelly wasn't going to let the same thing happen with Dosunmu, who sounded equally happy to stay in Minnesota once the season ended:

Avoiding the first or second apron of the luxury tax is important when trying to roster depth. The Timberwolves knew that re-signing Dosunmu, who had a $14.3 million cap hold, would put them closer to that territory.

Connelly deemed those consequences to be worth it, and the impact of Alexander-Walker's exit may have informed his mindset.
