Clippers Reportedly Make Decision on Brook Lopez's $9.2M Contract Option Ahead of NBA Free Agency

Joseph ZuckerJun 29, 2026

The Los Angeles Clippers are picking up their $9.2 million team option for veteran center Brook Lopez, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer.

The team reportedly intends to keep the veteran, rather than use him in an upcoming trade.

Lopez delivered a solid season in 2025-26. In 75 appearances, he averaged 8.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.2 blocks. While he shot a career-worst 42.8 percent from the field, that somewhat reflected the fact nearly 60 percent of his shot attempts were from beyond the arc. His 36 percent clip on three-pointers was in line with recent years.

The presence of the two-time All-Defensive honoree proved valuable when Los Angeles traded Ivica Zubac to the Indiana Pacers in February. He shifted into the starting rotation to compensate for Zubac's absence and remained a starter for the rest of the season.

Lopez's promotion coincided with the Clippers' impressive second half, which nearly propelled them into the playoffs.

"I'm comfortable in a lot of different roles," he said in late February. "It's something I got to do for a good decade in my career, so I'm confident doing that. Again, whatever's required of me."

There's no doubt that Lopez has declined relative to his peak on the Brooklyn Nets or the apex of his run with the Milwaukee Bucks. The trend will continue into next season for the 38-year-old.

Still, he was an effective stretch 5 for the Clippers and a plus defender around the basket. According to NBA.com, opponents shot 53.1 percent inside six feet when matched up against him.

Lopez's salary is a manageable sum as well. Los Angeles wouldn't save a lot of money by releasing him in favor of another center.
