J.B. Bickerstaff, Pistons Agree to Contract Extension After Team's 1st Playoff Series Win Since 2008

Scott PolacekMay 4, 2026

The Detroit Pistons advanced to the second round of the playoffs with a Game 7 win over the Orlando Magic on Sunday, and they rewarded head coach J.B. Bickerstaff accordingly on Monday.

Detroit announced it extended Bickerstaff's contract after he led the team to the best record in the Eastern Conference during the 2025-26 campaign.

To say Bickerstaff has done an impressive job in Detroit would be an understatement.

He took over the head coaching role ahead of the 2024-25 season after the Pistons finished 14-68 during the 2023-24 campaign and immediately made them a playoff team. They went 44-38 in his first season and lost in the first round to the New York Knicks.

But that set the stage for what was to come, as nobody in the East finished with a better record than Detroit's 60-22 mark in his second season.

Cade Cunningham has established himself as one of the best guards in the NBA, Jalen Duren was a first-time All-Star and role players such as Tobias Harris and Ausar Thompson have thrived in their roles.

Bickerstaff previously coached the Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies and Cleveland Cavaliers before taking the Pistons role. He led Cleveland to the playoffs in each of his final two years in 2023 and 2024 and will now face his former team in the second round following the win over the Magic.

For as excellent as this season was for the Pistons, the series against the Magic was closer than many likely anticipated.

They fell behind 3-1 and needed to win three straight with their backs against the wall to advance. They overcame a 60-38 halftime deficit in Game 6 and then took care of business back at home in Game 7.

While the series was closer than the top seed would have liked, at least it has momentum following three straight pressure-packed wins.

And its head coach has a new contract extension as well.
