New NBA Rumors Uncover Jamahl Mosley Hot-Seat Buzz After Magic Blow 3-1 Lead to Pistons in Playoffs

Jamahl Mosley was seemingly on the hot seat in Orlando heading into the playoffs, and new rumors revealed that his potential departure is only more likely after blowing a 3-1 lead to the Detroit Pistons.

Per NBA insider Marc Stein, the Magic head coach "has been subjected to hot seat chatter for many months" and "the anticipation in NBA coaching circles is that he will be the first one blamed for Orlando's shortcomings."

Mosley took over as the Magic's head coach in 2021 and has had mild success based on the franchise's standards, but has yet to turn Orlando into a true contender.

The Magic missed the playoffs in Mosley's first two seasons at the helm before going 47-35 in 2023-24, their best season since 2011. He's made the postseason in each of the last three years but has not won a series.

Orlando seemed well on its way to upsetting the top-seeded Pistons in the first round after taking a 3-1 series lead, but the Magic lost three straight to allow Detroit to advance to the second round.

Had Orlando pulled off the upset, the conversation surrounding Mosley could be much different now. The Athletic's Sam Amick reported earlier last week that winning against the Pistons and potentially in the second round "would certainly warrant a second look at his situation from the Magic's power brokers, no matter how much speculation might be swirling about his ousting."

Amick also noted that former Bulls coach Billy Donovan and Milwaukee associate head coach/former Lakers head coach Darvin Ham have been linked to the Orlando job since the end of the regular season when the Magic lost to a Boston Celtics team that was resting most of its starters. Mosley has been linked to the New Orleans Pelicans vacancy, according to Amick.
