LeBron James Talks 'Small Victories' After Making History in Lakers' NBA Playoffs Win vs. Rockets

Adam WellsMay 2, 2026

After leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a series victory over the Houston Rockets with a 98-78 win in Game 6 on Friday night, LeBron James is learning to savor these special moments.

Speaking to ESPN's Dave McMenamin after the game, James admitted he's learning to be grateful for the "small victories" at this stage of his career:

"It's not my style at all. I think me personally, the accepting and trying to be OK with the small victories comes with where I am in my career. Understanding, s--t, who knows how many more playoff series I'm going to be a part of? If I play one more or two more or three more seasons, that doesn't guarantee me to be in the postseason. So just trying to appreciate the moments, whatever it is, and however long I'm playing. It's pretty cool to have the opportunity to lead a team, at 41 years old, into the playoffs and for us to be able to win it."

Now at the age of 41, James has been more reflective on his career throughout this season. He got emotional when the Cleveland Cavaliers played a tribute video prior to tipoff of their Jan. 28 game against the Lakers.

"I'm just trying to take everything in, not take the moments for granted," James said after the game in Cleveland. "Because it could be [my last season]. I obviously haven't made a decision on the future, but it very well could be."

The playoff series against the Rockets saw James once again prove he is capable of putting a team on his back. He led all players in total points (139) and assists (50) in the six games.

Even though it doesn't necessarily look as easy for James to do all of the things he once did, the combination of skill and basketball IQ give him such an advantage that he is capable of being the best player on the floor at any given moment.

The victory marked James' 42nd career playoff series win, more than 24 NBA franchises. He is in the second round for the 16th time in 19 career playoff appearances.

Next up for James will be a tall task of trying to take down the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder. The Lakers will be heavy underdogs in the series, but any chance for him to get the spotlight in the postseason is worth celebrating at this point in his career.
