Victor Wembanyama Says He Wants Anthony Edwards to Return From Injury for Spurs-Wolves Series

Paul KasabianMay 1, 2026

The San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves will face each other in the Western Conference semifinals, but the status of Wolves superstar guard Anthony Edwards remains uncertain as he recovers from a hyperextension and bone bruise in his left knee.

On Friday, Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama was asked if, as a competitor, he wanted to see Edwards out there for the series. In sum, Wembanyama certainly would like to see him (and Donte DiVincenzo, who suffered a torn Achilles) out there, and he expressed empathy for anyone getting injured and missing time.

"Of course. They have more than Edwards and DiVincenzo, you know, but those two are players that I like watching, I like playing against. They go hard. It's funny because I'm not thinking about these guys, I don't hate them by any means, but any guy around the league getting hurt, I might compete against them, have some negative feelings towards any of my opponents. It always breaks my heart when I see somebody get hurt."

Edwards got injured in Game 4 of the Timberwolves' first round playoff series against the Denver Nuggets and has not returned. Minnesota lost Game 5 by a 125-113 score but rallied for a dramatic 110-98 win in Game 6 behind 32 points from Jaden McDaniels and 24 more via Terrence Shannon Jr.

The Timberwolves proved they can be competitive despite being shorthanded (Minnesota was also missing Ayo Dosunmu and Kyle Anderson alongside Edwards and DiVincenzo). Obviously, they would like Edwards back as soon as possible, but it appears he'll be missing more time.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Tuesday that Edwards would miss a minimum of two weeks from that moment forward.

The Spurs-Timberwolves series begins on Monday and runs every other day through Game 5 on May 12, so based on Charania's timeline, it appears Edwards would miss Games 1-4 at absolute minimum.

That's a tough blow for the Timberwolves given Edwards' tremendous season (career-high 28.8 PPG), but they're riding the high of an incredible effort against Denver and hope to continue that positive momentum vs. the Spurs. Game 1 is set for Monday in San Antonio.
