Washington Wizards icon John Wall is returning to the D.C. area in a new basketball role at Howard University.

Per ESPN's Shams Charania, Howard officials confirmed that Wall has been named president of basketball operations for the university.

Wall got to experience some of the Bison's success during the 2025-26 season in person. He was the designated captain for a day, including delivering a pregame speech to the team, for their Jan. 31 game against Norfolk State,

Charania added that event sparked the idea for Wall to take on some sort of official role with Howard:

"Wall has already taken a hands-on approach to the role at Howard, playing an active role in team meetings, evaluations of recruits and transfer targets and helping shape the program's overall strategic vision with focus on roster management, name, image and likeness deals, revenue sharing, agent negotiations, player mentorship."

Wall is stepping into a strong environment with Howard. Head coach Kenneth Blakeney has led the men's team to the NCAA tournament in three of the past four seasons. The 2025-26 team won 24 games, tied for the most in a single season in Howard history.

The women's team is coming off its best season ever with a 26-8 record, earning a No. 14 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Wall, the No. 1 pick in the 2010 NBA draft, played 11 seasons in the league. He spent nine years with the Wizards, leading them to the playoffs four times and making the All-Star team five times.

After Wall officially announced his retirement in August 2025, the Wizards honored him with a celebration during their game against the Milwaukee Bucks on Jan. 29.
