New Joel Embiid Injury Update, Timeline to Return for 76ers vs. Celtics in 2026 NBA Playoffs

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid will make his return from appendicitis in Sunday's Game 4 against the Boston Celtics.

This news comes after he was upgraded to questionable on Sunday afternoon.

It appeared as though Embiid was nearing a return as his status was upgraded ahead of Game 3, though the team and coach Nick Nurse didn't provide much added insight as to when he'd return.

Embiid hasn't played since the Sixers' 115-102 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on April 6. He underwent an emergency appendectomy earlier this month and is still working his way back.

Boston currently holds a 2-1 series lead. The Celtics were 123-91 victors in Game 1 before the Sixers turned the tables in Game 2. VJ Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey combined to score 59 points in a 111-97 win. Boston rebounded for a 108-100 victory as the series shifted back to Philadelphia in Game 3.

Needless to say, having Embiid would be helpful for Philly's upset bid.

During the regular season, the seven-time All-Star averaged 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game. According to NBA.com, the team was 8.6 points per 100 possessions better with him on the court.

With Embiid returning on Sunday, the Sixers will look to even the series.
