New Steph Curry Rumors on Warriors Contract Timeline After Comments on NBA Future, Retirement

The Golden State Warriors are planning to discuss a contract extension with franchise icon Stephen Curry this summer, according to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne and Anthony Slater.

Curry is signed for one more season.

After the Warriors' year came to an end, the two-time MVP told reporters he envisions playing for "multiple" seasons and entertained sticking around in the Bay Area:

Curry's future with Golden State may hinge on how much he's willing to tolerate a rebuild or a scenario where the team simply isn't a serious contender.

"In the late stages of Curry's career, they are in the construction zone, rebuilding while employing a franchise legend," Shelburne and Slater wrote. "One league source compared it to Kobe Bryant's final seasons with the Lakers."

The Los Angeles Lakers failed to make the playoffs in each of Bryant's last three years there. In his farewell campaign, L.A. won just 17 games as the focus was largely on Kobe's sendoff.

That would be quite the shift for Curry because the Warriors have basically been all in ever since winning the 2015 Finals. The one exception is 2019-20, when the 12-time All-Star appeared in just five games and watched his team land squarely in the lottery.

A lot of people would understand if Curry wanted to win a fifth title more than he wanted to retire with Golden State. The front office basically made the same calculation when it allowed Klay Thompson to leave as a free agent in 2024.

Still, stars beginning and ending their careers with the same franchise is an increasingly rare feature in sports. Wearing a different uniform wouldn't change Curry's legacy at all, but it could be an unsatisfying way to conclude a Hall of Fame-worthy run.
