Everything Steph Curry Said About NBA Retirement, Steve Kerr, Warriors Contract and Injury Recovery

Adam WellsApr 18, 2026

Stephen Curry isn't looking to walk away from the NBA, but he knows this offseason could be a transformative one for the future of the Golden State Warriors.

After the Warriors' season-ending loss to the Phoenix Suns in the play-in tournament on Friday night (starts at 6:28 mark), Curry said he still has "multiple" years remaining in his career and expressed interest in a contract extension if the team presented it to him.

Perhaps the biggest immediate storyline for the Warriors coming out of the game is Steve Kerr's future. He coached this season on the final year of his contract and said he intends to take time before deciding about what's next.

Curry expressed hope that Kerr would return as head coach, but noted he also wants him "to be happy" and "believe he's the right guy for the job."

One aspect of the season that impacted the Warriors was Curry's lack of availability due to injuries, particularly a knee issue that kept him out for 27 straight games from Feb. 3 through April 2.

Curry said rest is the primary option to help his knee recover before joking that playing "a lot of golf" is also good for it.

The issue Curry dealt with is known as "runner's knee" that is caused by any number of factors, including excessive training, overuse, tight hamstrings/Achilles or malalignment of the kneecap.

Per John's Hopkins Medicine, treatments for the injury can include strengthening exercises, cold packs and keeping the leg elevated.

Curry has a lot of miles on his legs after just completing his 17th NBA season. He did play at least 70 games in each of the previous two years prior to this season, so there's a reason to be optimistic that the knee issue won't be a chronic one.

The Warriors have Curry under contract for the 2026-27 campaign after signing him to a one-year, $62.6 million extension in August 2024. He was still incredibly productive when he did play this season, averaging 26.6 points on 39.3 percent three-point shooting and 4.7 assists per game in 43 appearances.

There are a lot of questions for the Warriors to figure out this summer, but Curry's return gives them hope that they can become a playoff team with a few roster tweaks in the offseason.
