Doc Rivers Clarifies Viral 'Resume' Comments from Report About Bucks Dysfunction

Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers clarified a recent report about telling Bucks players to, "Look at my résumé," during a team meeting last month.

During an appearance Friday on FanDuel's Run It Back, Rivers provided some insight into the line and why he said it:

"It was taken out of context to what I was trying to say," Rivers said. "I had a guy and he kept talking about his stats, so I was basically saying the same thing, 'Well, I have stats, too.' ... The reference was from the Indiana [head football] coach [Curt Cignetti]. It was more of a confident, like, 'I got stats too.'"

ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Rivers' comments this week, noting that they were made after the Bucks' blowout loss to the Chicago Bulls on March 1.

Per Charania, Rivers "implored his team to, 'Look at my résumé,' and 'Google me. I took teams to the playoffs and championship that weren't supposed to be there. I thought this was one of them.'"

Charania added, "That was not well-received internally. That was just another example of the disconnect between player and coach."

When Rivers mentioned Cignetti, he was referring to comments Cignetti made when Indiana hired him as head football coach in 2024.

During his introductory press conference, Cignetti said, "It's pretty simple. I win. Google me."

Since that time, Cignetti has more than backed up his confident remarks, as he led the Hoosiers to an 11-2 record in 2024 before going a perfect 16-0 and winning the first national championship in program history last season.

Rivers does indeed have an impressive track record in his own right, earning one All-Star selection in 13 seasons as an NBA guard before becoming one of the winningest coaches in history.

In 27 seasons as an NBA head coach with the Orlando Magic, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers and Bucks, Rivers is 1,193-865 in the regular season and 114-112 in the playoffs.

He has led teams to the playoffs 21 times and reached the NBA Finals twice, winning a championship with the Celtics in 2008.

His time in Milwaukee hasn't been all that successful, though, with a mark of just 96-102 in parts of three seasons.

The Bucks were ousted in the first round of the playoffs in each of his first two seasons, and they didn't even make the postseason this year with a 31-49 mark.

It didn't help that superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo was limited to 36 games this season due to injury, but the Bucks weren't good enough even when he played, going 17-19.

With Giannis potentially on the verge of getting traded this coming offseason, it could be time for an overhaul in Milwaukee, and that would likely include a coaching change.
