Watch Anthony Davis Recreate Nico Harrison's Phone Call for Luka Doncic Lakers Trade in Video

Doric SamApr 8, 2026

Washington Wizards center Anthony Davis opened up about his reaction to being traded from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Dallas Mavericks last season as part of the infamous Luka Doncic deal.

During an appearance on The Draymond Green Show (45:00 mark), Davis reenacted a phone call he received from former Mavs general manager Nico Harrison, who was the architect of one of the most shocking trades in NBA history.

"Yeah, I told you I was gonna come get you one day, I wanted you," Davis heard Harrison say on the phone.

The big man was understandably taken aback and responded, "Huh?!"

Davis went on to say that he initially thought the call was a joke and quickly got off the phone with Harrison. He called Lakers GM Rob Pelinka for clarification, and he was informed that he was traded in exchange for Doncic. Still, he was skeptical about the whole thing, and after not seeing a tweet from ESPN's Shams Charania, he brushed it off again.

However, a call from Philadelphia 76ers star center Joel Embiid gave Davis pause. He didn't pick up, but a call from another player prompted him to revisit Charania's page, and he saw the tweet confirming the news.

"By this time, I'm not shaking, but it's like my heart is in my stomach, because like, what the f--k just happened?" Davis said.

The Mavs fired Harrison in November and sent Davis to the Wizards at this season's trade deadline in February, confirming that the ill-fated deal that sent Doncic to the Lakers never should've happened in the first place.

Davis added that he went through a wide range of emotions in the immediate aftermath of the deal, and even after he came to understand why the trade was made, he still didn't appreciate the way he was shipped out of Los Angeles.

"I had no idea that this was happening, and I couldn't make sense of it because I'm like, 'Why?'" Davis said. "... But at the same time, even though I didn't understand it from my view, I understood as far as the trade, like, Luka is f--king Luka. ... So from the business standpoint, I can't be mad. But like, why? I just couldn't phathom, I couldn't understand it. And, nobody told me nothing. Nobody said a thing to me. You're just catching me off-guard like, 'Yeah, you're traded to Dallas.' That's what I couldn't get over, and I still can't get over. I think I deserved much more respect for all the time I've been there."
