Everything JJ Redick Said About Trending Jarred Vanderbilt Exchange Video During Lakers' Loss

Adam WellsApr 8, 2026

In the midst of another blowout loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night, Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick and Jarred Vanderbilt got into a verbal back and forth on the sideline at one point.

Speaking to reporters after the Lakers' 123-87 loss, Redick downplayed the situation:

"Nothing personal with him. Normal stuff from my end. I think for all of us, being undermanned, we've got to scrap and claw. We've got to all be on the same page. We've got to be great teammates. We've got to all play hard. I called a timeout to get him out of the game, and he reacted."

Redick called a timeout 16 seconds into the second quarter and replaced Vanderbilt, who missed three consecutive free throws at the end of the first quarter, with Dalton Knecht.

Vanderbilt and Redick were seen on the broadcast having an exchange about something. There was one point when Austin Reaves and assistant coach Nate McMillan stepped between the two.

Vanderbilt did not go back into the game after that moment. ESPN's Dave McMenamin noted the veteran forward left the arena without speaking to reporters after the game.

The situation came amid a third straight loss for the Lakers, with two of them against the Thunder. Oklahoma City outscored them by 79 points in those two games.

Reaves and Luka Dončić were both injured in the April 2 loss to Oklahoma City. They will miss the remainder of the regular season and their status for the start of the playoffs is unclear at this point. LeBron James sat out Tuesday's game.

The Lakers have lost three straight for the first time since Feb. 22-26. They have fallen into a tie with the Houston Rockets in the race for the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference with three games remaining.
