2026 NBA Playoff Picture, Play-In Standings and Bracket Predictions After April 7

Scott PolacekApr 7, 2026

The 2026 NBA playoff picture is rounding into form.

Postseason play begins April 14 with the play-in tournament for the Nos. 7-10 seeds, which means there are only a handful of regular-season games remaining for each team. That puts added pressure on each contest as teams battle for position in both the Eastern and Western Conferences.

With that in mind, here is a look at the updated standings amid a crowded Tuesday slate.

While the teams in the playoffs are set for each conference, seeding is still up for grabs for many teams.

The New York Knicks and Cleveland Cavaliers are separated by just one game in the battle for the No. 3 seed, which could have quite the impact in the second round if both teams advance.

After all, the No. 3 seed would be in line to face the second-seeded Boston Celtics, while the No. 4 seed would be in line to face the top-seeded Detroit Pistons.

The play-in spots in the Eastern Conference are also very much up for grabs, although the Miami Heat will be part of it for the fourth consecutive season. Whether the Toronto Raptors fall back into play-in position remains to be seen, and whoever claims the No. 6 spot will be facing the team that ends up at No. 3.

Perhaps the most intriguing race in the Western Conference is the one between the Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets with the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 spots hanging in the balance.

The Lakers are reeling with three straight losses since Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves sustained injuries on April 2 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. They are now in a tie with the Rockets for the No. 4 seed.

Whichever team falls to fifth will not have home-court advantage in the first round, while whichever team emerges at No. 3 could avoid the reigning-champion Thunder until the Western Conference Finals.

Still, a potential second-round date with Victor Wembanyama and the second-seeded San Antonio Spurs is not exactly an enticing prize, which underscores how daunting the entire Western Conference is going into the playoffs.

With all that as the backdrop, here is a prediction for the full set of first-round matchups after the seeding has been determined and the play-in tournament has finished:

First-Round Predicted Matchups

  • West: No. 1 Oklahoma City Thunder vs. No. 8 Golden State Warriors
  • West: No. 2 San Antonio Spurs vs. No. 7 Los Angeles Clippers
  • West: No. 3 Denver Nuggets vs. No. 6 Minnesota Timberwolves
  • West: No. 4 Houston Rockets vs. No. 5 Los Angeles Lakers
  • East: No. 1 Detroit Pistons vs. No. 8 Charlotte Hornets
  • East: No. 2 Boston Celtics vs. No. 7 Philadelphia 76ers
  • East: No. 3 New York Knicks vs. No. 6 Toronto Raptors
  • East: No. 4 Cleveland Cavaliers vs. No. 5 Atlanta Hawks
