Mavs' Jason Kidd Reacts to Mark Cuban's Comments on HC's Role in Luka Doncic, Lakers Trade

Adam WellsApr 1, 2026

Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd did not respond well to being put in the middle of Mark Cuban's ongoing feud with the organization in the aftermath of the Luka Dončić trade.

Speaking to Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News prior to Tuesday's game against the Milwaukee Bucks, Kidd reacted to recent comments Cuban made on a podcast about the infamous February 2025 trade.

"When are we going to move on?" Kidd said. "We have to move forward. We're focused on the present and the future and we've got an incredible opportunity to build."

Cuban went on the Intersections Podcast and spoke about regretting selling the Mavs to Patrick Dumont, but he also indicated Kidd was involved in the process of trading Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Kidd said publicly that he wasn't aware of the deal until it was close to being finalized, admitting he was "a little" surprised by the move.

"I've been in this league for a long, long time, so I've seen a lot," Kidd said on Feb. 2, 2025. "I've been involved in trades by the Mavericks, and so, it is part of the business. It is a little shocking, but like in the sense we have to push forward as an organization, as a team."

Despite seeming unhappy to still be answering questions about this situation 14 months after it happened, Kidd did tell Townsend he has respect for what Cuban has meant to his career.

"Out of respect to Cuban, he helped me and my family. We won a championship together. The two owners will figure it out. I truly believe that we have to focus on the present and the future. We've got a great opportunity."

Cuban still owns a share of the Mavericks, but he hasn't been the primary stakeholder since December 2023 when the NBA approved the sale of the franchise to a group led by Miriam Adelson and Patrick Dumont.

Kidd is in the midst of his fifth season as Mavericks head coach. He led the team to the NBA Finals during the 2023-24 season and has a 203-201 overall record.
