Colt Emerson, Mariners Reportedly Agree to New $95M Contract, Full Details on Trade Clause, Bonuses
The Seattle Mariners are making a big bet on Colt Emerson before he has played in an MLB game, signing their top prospect to an eight-year contract extension.
Per Robert Murray of FanSided, Emerson's deal will pay him $95 million over eight years, plus a team option for a ninth year, a full no-trade clause and escalators that can bring the total value over $130 million.

10 MLB Overreactions Worth Taking Seriously 😐
The $95 million guaranteed is the most ever given out to a prospect with no games at the MLB level. It beats the previous record set by Jackson Chourio, who signed an eight-year deal worth $82 million guaranteed with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Emerson's deal also marks the second agreement of its kind given out already this week. USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported on Monday that the Brewers and Cooper Pratt were close to finalizing an eight-year deal worth more than $50 million.
Teams have been acting more aggressively in terms of securing long-term extensions with their top young players very early in their careers. Roman Anthony got an eight-year, $130 million extension from the Boston Red Sox last August after just 46 MLB games.
There are certainly risks to this strategy, as the Red Sox also found out with Kristian Campbell after he got an eight-year, $60 million deal in April 2025 after he played five MLB games. He was demoted to the minors two months later and started this season in Triple-A.
Emerson, the No. 22 overall pick in the 2023 MLB draft, had a breakout year in 2025. He hit .285/.383/.458 across three levels as a 19-year-old and silenced any doubts about his ability to stick at shortstop.
MLB.com ranked Emerson as the No. 7 overall prospect coming into this season. He joins a Mariners core that includes Julio Rodríguez, Cal Raleigh, Josh Naylor. All four players are under contract through at least the 2030 season.
Emerson and Rodríguez could play together through 2034 if the team options in their contracts are exercised.
Leo Rivas is currently starting at shortstop in Seattle, but Emerson's new deal is a strong indication that it probably won't be long before he gets the call to take his place in the middle of the diamond.
