New Warriors Rumors Link LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard as Offseason Targets Alongside Steph Curry

The Golden State Warriors are reportedly planning on going big-game hunting this offseason in hopes of adding talent around star point guard Stephen Curry.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Warriors pursued Los Angeles Clippers star forward Kawhi Leonard at the trade deadline last month and "will investigate that possibility once again" this summer. Stein also noted that Golden State is "routinely described by rival teams as one of the few credible destinations" for Los Angeles Lakers star forward LeBron James if he leaves Hollywood for his 24th NBA season.

"It has some legs," one league source told Stein of the James being linked to the Warriors.

Melissa Rohlin of the New York Post reported last month that "there's definitely some level of mutual interest" between James and the Warriors. The 41-year-old hasn't yet committed to returning for the 2026-27 season, but Rohlin noted that he and Curry "have a deep well of respect for each other," fueling the belief that Golden State has a viable shot at landing him.

It would have been a massive surprise to see the Clippers trade Leonard to an in-division rival, but Stein reported that the Warriors "made what has been described as a determined trade run" at him in the final hour of the Feb. 5 trade deadline. However, it was expected that he would be unavailable after Los Angeles sent veteran center Ivica Zubac to the Indiana Pacers.

At 36-38 entering Sunday's game against the Denver Nuggets (36-38), the Warriors rank 10th in the Western Conference and are unlikely to contend for an NBA title. The team could already be preparing for what will be a busy offseason.

Stein noted that Warriors head coach Steve Kerr's contract expires at the end of the season. There are also reportedly "increased expectations" that Golden State will re-sign veteran center and impending free agent Kristaps Porzingis, who was acquired at the trade deadline.

If the Warriors can add James or Leonard to the mix they will surely be among the top title contenders next season.
