Reviewing 2026 NBA Playoff Picture and Latest Bracket Scenarios for East, West
The 2026 NBA Playoffs are rapidly approaching and the only thing we know for sure is that the battle for the top seed in the Western Conference, between defending champions the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs may go right down to the wire.
In the Eastern Conference, it is essentially Detroit, Boston, New York, and Cleveland, then everyone else as it continues to be top-heavy.
Find out where every team currently sits in the hunt for the postseason, as well as who has already been eliminated, with this review of the current standings.

7. Philadelphia 76ers (40-33)
8. Charlotte Hornets (39-34)
9. Orlando Magic (39-34)
10. Miami Heat (39-35)
The Detroit Pistons are the best team in the Eastern Conference, hold a four-game lead over the Celtics, and their magic number to solidify the No. 1 seed is five. Their remaining schedule, however, is as tough as any in the NBA, with only one game against a losing team that has been eliminated from the postseason.
The Pistons, 8-2 in their last 10, face the Minnesota Timberwolves twice, the Western Conference-leading Oklahoma City Thunder, a very good Toronto team, and others vying for Play-In Tournament spots, such as Philadelphia, Charlotte, Milwaukee, and Orlando.
Boston also faces its own uphill battle for that No. 1 seed, with playoff and play-in teams in eight of its next nine.e
It is a testament to the parity in the Eastern Conference outside of its top four teams that every team still alive in the playoff hunt could conceivably earn the No. 5 or 6 seed and avoid the Play-In Tournament altogether.

8. Los Angeles Clippers (38-36)
9. Portland Trailblazers (37-38)
10. Golden State Warriors (36-38)
The Oklahoma City Thunder are the defending NBA champions and the league's best team, though the distance between them and the second-seeded San Antonio Spurs is tighter than expected.
The Thunder's magic number to secure the top seed in the conference is eight, thanks to the Spurs' excellent play this season.
OKC has a strong slate of games remaining, including two against the No. 3 Lakers and Eastern Conference giants Detroit and New York. There is a winnable game against Utah, but every one of the other remaining games is against a team with playoff aspirations.
The Spurs have a slightly less tough schedule, with games against Chicago, Milwaukee, and Dallas on the slate, but any slip-up could cost them the chance to be the No. 1 seed entering the postseason.
