Bill Belichick Responds to Question about Pro Football Hall of Fame Snub Amid UNC Spring Practice

Adam WellsMar 25, 2026

In typical Bill Belichick fashion, he had nothing much to say about missing out on the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year on the ballot.

Speaking to reporters amid the start of North Carolina's spring practice, Belichick was asked if he had any comment about the Hall of Fame snub.

"No, I'm focused on coaching this team and focused on getting Carolina football to the highest level I can," Belichick said. "That's what I've always … I focus about what I can do. Things that are out of my control, I don't worry about."

The biggest story from the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame vote was Belichick's exclusion.

ESPN's Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham reported on Jan. 27 that Belichick fell short of the 40 votes needed from the selection committee for inclusion.

"Six Super Bowls isn't enough?" Belichick asked an associate upon learning the news, per Van Natta and Wickersham.

Even though Belichick didn't have much to say about the Pro Football Hall of Fame, plenty of people from around the sports world spoke out on his behalf when the news first broke.

Tom Brady, who spent 20 seasons playing for Belichick with the New England Patriots, was confused by the decision when he spoke about it on a radio interview.

"I don't understand it. I mean, I was with him every day. If he's not a first-ballot Hall of Famer, there's really no coach that should ever be a first-ballot Hall of Famer, which is completely ridiculous because people deserve it. He's incredible. There's no coach I'd rather play for. If I'm picking one coach to go out there to win a Super Bowl—give me one season—I'm taking Bill Belichick. So that's enough said."

There were multiple scandals during Belichick's Patriots tenure that are a blemish on his resume, including Spygate in 2007 when the organization had to forfeit its 2008 first-round pick after the NFL determined a video assistant was caught filming practice for the New York Jets.

On the whole, though, there's no denying that Belichick is one of the best and most accomplished coaches in the history of the sport. It would seem likely, especially in light of the pushback to this year's vote, that he will make it in 2027.

For now, Belichick's primary focus is on improving going into his second season as head coach at North Carolina. He led the program to a 4-8 record in his first year with the program.
