How Much Money Did Kentucky Spend on Roster That Lost to Iowa State in March Madness Bracket?

Doric SamMar 23, 2026

Kentucky's 82-63 loss against Iowa State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday was even more of a disappointment when factoring in the astronomical price of the Wildcats' roster.

According to The Athletic's CJ Moore, Kentucky "spent a reported $22 million" in NIL deals ahead of the 2025-26 season, making it the most expensive roster in the history of college basketball. The return on investment was minimal, as the Wildcats finished the year with a 22-14 record and failed to reach the Elite Eight for the sixth straight year, the longest drought in program history.

Despite Kentucky's exorbitant spending, the talent simply wasn't there. Moore noted that the roster had just two players projected to be chosen in the 2026 NBA draft this summer in sophomore center Jayden Quaintance and senior guard Otega Oweh. Quaintance, who was one of the team's biggest investments, played just four games this year while recovering from ACL surgery last March. Senior point guard Jaland Lowe, another high-priced player, played just nine games before undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery.

"We were disappointed that we never got to run with the roster that we thought we had," Kentucky head coach Mark Pope said.

Moore went on to explain that Kentucky made some questionable decisions in building its roster for this season.

"The belief around college basketball was that Kentucky spent last spring just to spend, outbidding itself for players and shelling out salaries that were way beyond how many of its players were valued on the open market," Moore stated.

It was also noted that second-seeded Iowa State (29-7) "spent significantly less" than seventh-seeded Kentucky in NIL deals. The Cyclones managed to dominate the Wildcats despite being without star forward Joshua Jackson, who missed the game with a sprained ankle.

Pope will continue to face pressure to return the program to prominence after another disappointing exit from the NCAA Tournament.

"This is the greatest place in the world to play basketball," he said after Sunday's loss. "It comes with all of the stuff. It comes with all the pressure and the scrutiny. These guys won games in the NCAA Tournament back-to-back years, and at any other school, that would be good, and at Kentucky, the uniqueness of Kentucky, that's not the answer."
