Otega Oweh's Heroics in Kentucky's Win Hailed by Fans, Updated Path to Final Four in March Madness

The seventh-seeded Kentucky Wildcats held off a tough challenge from the No. 10 Santa Clara Broncos on Friday, earning an 89-84 overtime win in the first round of the 2026 NCAA men's basketball tournament.

The Broncos and Wildcats traded clutch shots to force OT, as Santa Clara's Allen Graves knocked down a go-ahead three-pointer with 2.4 seconds remaining, only for Kentucky's Otega Oweh to answer with a desperation heave from just beyond halfcourt to tie it at the buzzer:

Kentucky proceeded to take control in overtime, scoring eight unanswered points after going down 79-77 to seal the dramatic victory.

Oweh was Kentucky's unquestioned leader on the court Friday, pacing the team with 35 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, including his miraculous shot to extend the game into overtime.

College basketball fans took to X to celebrate Oweh for his unbelievable effort with a series of posts:

With their triumph at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, the Wildcats moved into the second round in the Midwest Region, and they will face the winner of Friday's game between No. 2 Iowa State and No. 15 Tennessee State on Sunday for a trip to the Sweet 16.

Assuming all favorites win in the Midwest Region, Kentucky faces a potential Final Four path of No. 2 Iowa State in the second round, No. 3 Virginia in the Sweet 16 and No. 1 Michigan in the Elite Eight:

Santa Clara reached the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1996, and Kentucky denied the Broncos their first NCAA tournament win since that same season.

Since becoming Kentucky's head coach prior to the 2024-25 season, Mark Pope has now led the Wildcats to wins in back-to-back NCAA tournaments.

They reached the Sweet 16 last season, marking their best result in the tourney since going to the Elite Eight in 2019 under John Calipari.

Kentucky has won at least one game in three of the past four tournaments, but the blue-blood program has not reached a Final Four since 2015.

Doing so this season will be no easy task, as the Wildcats are likely lining up for a second-round meeting with an Iowa State team that entered the tourney with a 27-7 record.

Kentucky has no shortage of talent, though, and a second straight trip to the Sweet 16 would be a major accomplishment for a team that lost six of its final 10 games prior to the NCAA tournament.
