AJ Dybantsa's NBA Draft Stock Update After BYU Is Upset by Texas in 1st Round of March Madness

Andrew PetersMar 19, 2026

BYU and star freshman AJ Dybantsa's season has come to an end.

The No. 6 Cougars were upset 79-71 by No. 11 Texas on Thursday, presumably ending Dybantsa's college career after one year.

Like most of BYU's losses this season, Dybantsa wasn't to blame. The nation's leading scorer this year posted a game-high 35 points and 10 rebounds, and just one other BYU player was in double figures.

"I don't think we can," Texas head coach Sean Miller said when asked how to stop Dybantsa at halftime.

Assuming Dybantsa is on his way to the draft, he gave scouts quite the final showcase before the combine. The consensus among fans and the media is that he'll be the first player off the board in June.

Dybantsa, who averaged 25.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game this season, is the projected No. 1 overall pick in the latest mock draft from Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman.

If he isn't the first overall pick, he'll almost certainly be the second or third player off the board. The question, however, is whether he's set on declaring for the draft. He said earlier this month that he "might not leave college," so his decision is certainly not set.

Returning to the collegiate level would be a huge win for BYU, but a major loss to whoever gets the top pick. With the Cougars' season now over, he'll likely make his draft decision soon.
