Trae Young Injury Update, Latest on Surgery Decision and Timeline to Return to Wizards

Andrew PetersMar 21, 2026

Washington Wizards star Trae Young is recovering from a right quadriceps injury and lower back irritation, the team announced on Saturday. "Both injuries are being treated conservatively and will not require surgery at this time."

Just a few games after making his Wizards debut, Young was diagnosed with a right quad contusion after suffering the injury in the third quarter of Monday's contest against the Golden State Warriors.

Before exiting with the injury, Young had 21 points on 7-of-10 from the field, already posting his best statistical game since joining the Wizards.

Young, who was sent to Washington in January in return for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert, made his debut earlier this month after being sidelined since December. He had been dealing with an MCL injury and a quad contusion in the same leg he injured on Monday.

The Wizards have been careful with Young since he made his debut. Through his first four games with the team, he hadn't logged more than 24 minutes and he had played just 21 minutes before exiting against the Warriors.

While the extent of his latest ailment remains unknown, Washington will likely continue to limit his minutes to avoid another injury.

The Wizards would clearly prefer for Young to be fully healthy, but his absence wouldn't be detrimental to the team. Washington is in 14th place in the Eastern Conference at 16-53 and has been eliminated from playoff contention.

The Wizards also have some motivation to lose since they'll lose their first-round draft pick if its outside of the top eight. After losing their last 14 games, they're well on their way to securing a spot in the lottery.
