UMBC Trolls Steelers on Twitter as Flight to NCAA Tournament First Four Delayed
First, UMBC trolled Alabama football.
Then, it moved up to the NFL to troll the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Retrievers men's basketball team ran into some trouble getting to Dayton, Ohio, for Tuesday's First Four game against Howard because of a flight delay but revealed Monday they eventually arrived:
UMBC also took the time to poke fun at the Steelers' recent struggles to win a playoff game when someone suggested it was making too many excuses before taking the court Tuesday:
Pittsburgh hasn't won a playoff game since the 2016 season despite reaching the postseason in six of the nine seasons since that achievement. The constant postseason failure led to plenty of criticism for head coach Mike Tomlin as his tenure proceeded, and he stepped down after the 2026 campaign.
UMBC, on the other hand, won three postseason games just to reach the Big Dance.
It defeated New Hampshire in the quarterfinals of the American East tournament, UMass Lowell in the semifinals and Vermont in the final. Its reward was a spot in the First Four and its first NCAA tournament appearance since the 2017-18 campaign.
And that 2018 tournament appearance was among the most famous in recent college basketball history.
The Retrievers stunned Virginia and became the first No. 16 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed in the history of the men's tournament. While it lost to ninth-seeded Kansas State in the second round, it was a result that will forever be associated with the program.
It will have to defeat Howard for a chance to make more history with a matchup against top-seeded Michigan in the Midwest Region.
That will be a tall task, but the Retrievers enter the tournament with plenty of momentum following 12 straight victories. They also might have fans of the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns behind them as well after trolling the Steelers.
