Is Nate Ament a Lottery Pick? Here's What Our Latest 2026 NBA Mock Draft Says

Jonathan WassermanApr 5, 2026

Excitement around Nate Ament started to build during his senior year of high school. He was the popular prediction for the prospect who'd eventually follow Darryn Peterson, AJ Dybantsa and Cameron Boozer.

Confidence in Ament has wavered since after he shot just 39.9 percent from the floor as a freshman at Tennessee.

Still, the 6'10", 19-year-old had a productive season while flashing an enticing mix of positional size and guard/wing skills. Though no longer a projected top-five pick, Ament figures to remain in the conversation for lottery teams who can afford to exercise patience.

Realistic Draft Range: Mid-first round

There is always going to be demand for big-wing scorers. Ament even backed up the theoretical upside with 16.7 points per game. Despite an inefficient freshman season, there are still going to be buyers drawn to 6'10" size and shotmaking.

Still, 43.0 percent shooting inside the arc and 33.1 percent shooting from three are too problematic for top-10 teams in a strong draft.

Ament is likely to slip to somewhere in the late lottery or early 20s, depending on who's willing to project significant physical and fundamental growth.

Realistic Pro Comparison: Zaccharie Risacher

2 of 4
Brooklyn Nets v Atlanta Hawks

Ament's scouting report isn't far off from Zaccharie Risacher's, considering they're both big-wing shotmakers who aren't likely to offer much versatility elsewhere.

They're going to generate most of their offense off the ball. Their positional height plays a role in their shot-creation, not their handles or explosion.

Ament and Risacher will be complementary scorers who can play multiple positions. But neither are going to be focal points of an offense.

Strengths

3 of 4
Tennessee v Vanderbilt

Strength 1: Positional size

A lot of Ament's shot-creation comes from his positional height and high release point. He's able to get himself makable shot attempts just by rising up over his defender.

Strength 2: Shotmaking potential

Though his percentages were weak, there is enough film of made jumpers to remain positive about his outlook as a perimeter scoring threat. He hit 45 pull-ups and 45 catch-and-shoot attempts, including 46 threes and 45 mid-range jumpers. Becoming more consistent from outside will be the obvious goal that could swing his offensive value.

Strength 3: Defensive potential

Despite low steal and block numbers, Ament had plenty of promising defensive sequences using his height and length to contest various archetypes. He shows good competitiveness, and with some added strength, he has the chance to be a rangy, multi-position defender.

Weaknesses

4 of 4
Auburn v Tennessee

Weakness 1: Lack of explosion

Ament can have trouble turning the corner on his defender or exploding up through shot-blockers on his finishes. He shot just 47.8 percent at the rim and 43.0 percent on layups, easily the lowest among prospects expected to generate first-round interest.

Weakness 2: Shooting consistency

Shooting has to become a strength for Ament to justify being taken somewhere in the mid-first round. He was inconsistent on relatively low three-point volume (33.3 percent, 3.9 attempts).

Weakness 3: No-show games

Too often, Ament was a non-factor or just couldn't find a way to earn himself an easy basket. He shot 2-of-12 in Tennessee's loss to Michigan in the NCAA tournament and 1-of-13 in a loss to Vanderbilt in the SEC tournament. There were too many other games throughout the season when defenses totally eliminated Tennessee's top prospect.
