Travis Kelce Contract Details, Incentives, Bonuses, Salary Cap Hits Revealed for Chiefs Return
New details have emerged about star tight end Tracis Kelce's one-year deal to return to the Kansas City Chiefs for his 14th season in the NFL.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that Kelce officially signed a three-year contract that can be worth up to $54.7 million as he returns to the Chiefs:
According to Mike Kadlick and Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, Kelce's $12 million deal is fully guaranteed and includes a $3 million base salary and $9 million in a series of roster bonuses. The contract is broken up to manage his cap hits, as he will count for $4.9 million against the cap in 2026 and dead-money hits of $3.6 million in 2027 and 2028. The deal also has $3 million in available incentives.
It was noted that Kelce's per-game roster bonuses are actually 90-man roster bonuses that are fully guaranteed, meaning he doesn't have to be active on game days to receive them. Kansas City also reportedly was able to spread out his cap hits over three years by "exploiting the 50 percent rule and a post-June 1 mechanism."
"The Chiefs have a long-standing policy of not doing void years, and the above two rules allow them to sidestep that (using a tactic the Eagles have over the years)," Kadlick and Breer explained. "Kelce has minimum salaries built into dummy years in 2027 and 2028, with a $40 million guarantee for 2028 vesting June 8 of next year—which will force the Chiefs to release him by then, and allow for them to spread the dead money out, since the date falls after June 1."
The first tier of Kelce's incentives is tied to the Chiefs making the playoffs, as he will make $750,000 if he plays 60 percent of the regular season snaps, $1 million at 70 percent or $2 million at 80 percent. If the Chiefs win the AFC championship and go to the Super Bowl, he will get another $250,000 at 60 percent playtime, or $1 million at 70 percent playtime.
Kelce briefly contemplated retirement before deciding to return to Kansas City for the 2026 campaign. His contract reportedly will help set the stage for whatever he decides on his future after next season.
"The contract basically paves the way to retirement for Kelce," Kadlick and Breer added. "If that's the path, after Kelce's 14th season, the Chiefs would then quietly release him after June 1. If it's not, then they'd obviously renegotiate well before then."
