Joel Embiid Undergoes Surgery, Latest Updates and Timeline on 76ers Star Ahead of NBA Playoffs

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid was discharged from the hospital on Friday after a successful appendectomy, the team announced.

"Embiid's surgical recovery will be managed by team physicians in consultation with his surgeon," the Sixers said. "A timeline for return to basketball activities has not yet been determined."

Embiid has once again dealt with various injuries and maladies throughout the year, but not quite to the extent he did last year when he played just 19 games.

The former MVP started the year on a minutes restriction and missed most of November because of his nagging knee injury, but he was able to suit up for the majority of December.

Embiid was then able to put together a healthy January, but his knee injury once again kept him off the court for almost all of February. At the end of the month, he suffered an oblique injury that has sidelined him for multiple weeks.

When healthy, Embiid has been highly productive, putting up 26.9 points and 7.7 boards per game, but healthy stretches have been sporadic for most of the season. Luckily for Philadelphia, Tyrese Maxey's strong play has kept the team alive in the playoff race.

The 76ers are currently sitting in eighth place in the East at 43-37. They're set to face the Indiana Pacers on Friday night before closing out the regular season on Sunday against the Milwaukee Bucks.
