Mark Cuban Regrets Nico Harrison Hire and Jokes About Luka Being 'Worst' NBA Trade Ever in New Video

Scott PolacekMar 12, 2026

Mark Cuban's decision to hire former Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison indirectly set off a chain of events that ended with Luka Dončić on the Los Angeles Lakers, and he now regrets it.

"In hindsight now, it was a mistake," he said of the decision to hire Harrison during an appearance on The Adam Friedland Show (37:25 mark).

He also joked the trade that sent Dončić to the Lakers was the "worst" in NBA history, adding "I remember exactly where I was" when it happened.

"When he told me about it, I thought he was asking me as opposed to telling me," Cuban said of Harrison. "He's like, 'no, it's done.' And I'm like, 'what the f--k?'"

Cuban still owns a minority stake in the Mavericks, but he sold his majority stake in 2023. Dallas hired Harrison as the general manager ahead of the 2021-22 campaign.

While Harrison helped put together the team that reached the 2024 NBA Finals, he will always be remembered for his decision to trade Dončić to Los Angeles in a move that brought back Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick.

After all, it seemed like Dončić was well on his way to becoming a Mavericks legend much in the same way Dirk Nowitzki was during his career. Dončić was a fan favorite, led the team to the NBA Finals in his age-24 season and was already one of the best players in the entire league.

When he was traded, Mavericks fans responded by protesting and chanting "Fire Nico" at games. That Davis isn't even on Dallas any longer after the team traded him to the Washington Wizards following an injury-riddled tenure makes it look even worse in hindsight.

Dallas has since fired Harrison and is just 21-44 on the season, although it at least has a reason for optimism with Cooper Flagg leading the way as a talented rookie.

But Cuban wishes it never reached this point following his decision to hire Harrison.
