New Giannis Trade Rumors Reveal Heat's Plans for NBA Free Agency After Failed Deadline Pursuit

Doric SamFeb 10, 2026

The Miami Heat were among the teams that failed to convince the Milwaukee Bucks to trade star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo at last week's deadline, but they reportedly haven't given up their pursuit of the two-time NBA MVP.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, a source said that "another attempt to acquire Antetokounmpo will be made" by the Heat this summer. Jackson noted that the Miami never said "no" to a trade offer from Milwaukee, but a source said that the Bucks "never told the Heat what would be enough to make them say 'yes.'"

The Heat were amongย just three teamsย in the NBA that didn't make a trade before Thursday's deadline. Despite having a reputation for being a big-game hunter on the trade market, Miami has struggled to land a big fish in recent years.

Jackson explained that the growing frustration among Heat fans is why the team "desperately" tried to acquire Antetokounmpo by "secretly crafting a way to create a third first-round pick to try to convince the Bucks to make the deal." He added that Milwaukee "considered Miami's offer, but the belief is that Milwaukee said no because Antetokounmpo never strongly demanded a trade and the Bucks believe they can convince him to stay this summer."

ESPN'sย Jamal Collierย reported on Monday that Antetokounmpo and the Bucksย won't holdย any discussions about his future until this summer. The 31-year-old has one more guaranteed year remaining on hisย contractย and a $62.8 million player option for the 2027-28 season, and he will become eligible to sign a four-year, $275 million extension with Milwaukee on Oct. 1.

The Heat would vault into title contention if they manage to acquire Antetokounmpo, so it can be expected that they will make another aggressive attempt to pry him away from the Bucks during the upcoming offseason.
