2026 Men's NCAA Tournament Bubble Teams in Need of a Big February

David KenyonFeb 5, 2026

Although the men's college basketball community loves to talk about the bubble, that's not a metaphorical world in which the teams want to reside.

Since less than six weeks remain until Selection Sunday, the magnitude of every result is intensified. Conference play generally can provide opportunities for marquee wins, but programs must capitalize on those chances.

And, perhaps just importantly, they have to avoid bad losses, too.

For programs in this category, they would love little more than to play themselves off the bubble with an impressive set of results in February.

Miami Hurricanes

Up until the last couple weeks of January, Miami occupied a fine space. Even following a loss at Clemson, the 'Canes held a 15-3 record with all three setbacks happening against Top 25 opponents.

The problem is what happened in the next four games.

Florida State clipped Miami, which recovered to beat Syracuse and Stanford before falling to Cal. Suddenly, a rĆ©sumĆ© devoid of bad losses had a couple of them—and Miami doesn't have quality wins to atone for them.

This month, though, the 17-5 Hurricanes take on North Carolina, North Carolina State, Virginia Tech and Virginia. All four programs are part of the most recent NCAA tournament field projection from B/R's Kerry Miller.

Picking up a couple of victories against that group—while avoiding any more ugly results—is essential for Miami.

Miami RedHawks

Is this a fair reality? Probably not!

We're not interested in lying, however, and the unbeaten RedHawks have the unfortunate task of playing with bracket fire on a nightly basis.

As of this writing, Miami boasts a 23-0 record. The issue is that rĆ©sumĆ© only includes three Quadrant 2 wins and four in Quad 3. Metrics can change, but currently there are zero Quad 1 opponents—upcoming or past—on the RedHawks' schedule.

Winning is hard. Everybody else in the MAC will be geared up for a chance to snap Miami's unbeaten streak, and several teams nearly did recently.

Miami has a razor-thin margin for error.

But if the RedHawks keep surviving in February, they'll remain in the field.

Ohio State Buckeyes

3 of 7
Ohio State v Michigan

The positive news is Ohio State has zero horrible losses. Within their 14-7 record, the Buckeyes are a perfect 10-0 against Quad 3/4 teams.

So, you can imagine where this is headed.

Look at the Quad 1 sector, and OSU is a paltry 1-6 with a victory at Northwestern that barely qualifies as Q1. Close losses to North Carolina and Nebraska, in hindsight, are crushing the Buckeyes as they sit today.

The double-edged sword for Ohio State is its loaded upcoming slate. After taking on Maryland, the Buckeyes meet a projected tourney team—Michigan, USC, Virginia, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Iowa—in every remaining February game.

Win a few, and Jake Diebler's team will be part of the conversation. But a string of losses would keep OSU on the wrong side of the bubble.

Oklahoma State Cowboys

The story is similar for Oklahoma State.

After rolling to a 12-1 start in nonconference play, the Pokes have stumbled a bit since Big 12 action began. They are just 4-5 in league play.

As with Ohio State, the problem is where the victories land. Oklahoma State was winless in four Quad 1 attempts until Wednesday, and a 6-2 mark against Quad 2 opponents is merely enough for the Cowboys to stay on the radar.

However, we have great news: Oklahoma State began its challenging month with a win over BYU, and marquee games at Arizona and home to Kansas are on the horizon.

Adding a second Q1 victory would greatly boost OSU's profile.

Saint Mary's Gaels

New season, same storyline. My colleague, Kerry Miller, said it best.

"In more seasons than not over the past two decades, some variant of this question has been asked of bracketologists: Does Saint Mary's need a win over Gonzaga in order to make the NCAA tournament?"

Because of the Gaels' recent loss at Gonzaga—plus a setback two weeks ago at Santa Clara—the answer is a resounding yes.

Saint Mary's is 20-4 with an 0-3 record against Quad 1 teams.

The ideal situation is that Wednesday's win over San Diego has started a six-game winning streak. That would set up Saint Mary's to have a 25-4 record entering its season-ending home showdowns with Santa Clara and Gonzaga.

At that point, Saint Mary's will still likely need that triumph over the Zags. But the Gaels are good enough to make it happen.

Virginia Tech Hokies

If you want a straightforward rƩsumƩ, do not look at Virginia Tech. There's a little good, a little bad and everything in between.

Most valuably, the Hokies toppled rival Virginia in a three-overtime thriller to begin ACC play. Bubble teams generally are searching for that type of marquee win, and Virginia Tech picked it up quickly.

Also, the Hokies lost to Quad 3 Stanford a week later. Sigh.

During this pivotal month, Virginia Tech faces a road gauntlet at NC State, Clemson, Miami and North Carolina—all currently in B/R's field. The only two home contests (Florida State and Wake Forest) are absolute must-wins for the 16-7 Hokies, who desperately need to steal a couple of those away games.

Throw in a March matchup at UVA, and whether the Hokies can navigate the unfriendly environments will determine their NCAA hopes.

UCLA Bruins

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: OCT 28 UC Irvine at UCLA
Donovan Dent and Tyler Bilodeau

Holding an identical 16-7 record to Virginia Tech, UCLA is also preparing for a rough schedule to close the regular season.

Get ready for another Mick Cronin rant.

In seriousness, the ever-vocal UCLA coach is probably not excited about the back-to-back at Michigan and Michigan State. After that mid-month journey to the Mitten, the Bruins host Illinois and rival USC.

UCLA's narrow win over Purdue is doing some heavy lifting on a profile that lacks high-end success. While the Bruins are 11-0 against Quads 3 and 4, they are 2-6 in Quadrant 1 with a 3-1 mark in Q2.

For the Bruins to find more respect than their current bubble perch, a pair of ranked victories (and no bad losses) in February would do the trick.
