Luka Doncic, JJ Redick Dish on Lakers Roster After Anniversary of Mavs Trade amid Deadline Rumors
Just one year after pulling off one of the most shocking trades in NBA history by acquiring Luka Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks, the Los Angeles Lakers could be gearing up for more moves ahead of Thursday's trade deadline.
While speaking to reporters after Sunday's 112-100 loss to the New York Knicks, Dončić suggested that the Lakers roster is fine as it is, but he acknowledged that another loss could lead to some changes
"I think we're in a good spot," Dončić said, per The Athletic's Dan Woike. "Obviously, got some work to do. But I think today we obviously missed a lot of good looks, but I think we have a great group."
Dončić dropped 30 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists in Sunday night's loss. The Lakers shot 12-of-42 from three-point range, indicating that they have a need for more consistency from beyond the arc.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick had a more realistic assessment of the state of the roster, admitting that there are improvements that could be made.
"I think whether you're a GM, a coach, a player, you're never gonna look at a roster and say, 'This is a perfect roster, and all the pieces fit perfectly together,'" Redick said. "It doesn't really happen a lot."
Broderick Turner and Thuc Nhi Nguyen of the L.A. Times recently reported that it would be "pretty outrageous" for the Lakers to try to pull off a trade of the caliber of last year's Dončić acquisition. However, Los Angeles is believed to be "looking for big wing players," and forward Rui Hachimura and guard Dalton Knecht were named as potential pieces that the Lakers could include in a deal.
The trade speculation has made its way into Los Angeles' locker room ahead of the deadline, with one veteran player telling Woike, "Just when it's quiet, is when you really need to start looking over your shoulder."
The Lakers (29-19) will complete their road trip on Tuesday against the Brooklyn Nets (13-35), which could be the last time this current group is together if the team decides to make some changes at Thursday's deadline.
