Watch Dr. J and Common's New 'Soul Power' ABA Documentary Trailer Ahead of Release Date
Julius Erving's Hall of Fame resume includes two ABA championships, one NBA championship, four MVPs, 16 All-Star selections and a spot on the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team.
He can add executive producer to that list of accomplishments.
Erving, who was known as Dr. J during his legendary playing career, is an executive producer alongside rapper Common and coach George Karl of the upcoming ABA four-part docuseries titled Soul Power: The Legend of the American Basketball Association.
Common is also the narrator for the documentary that will release on Feb. 12 on Prime Video, but fans got a taste of what is to come Monday with the release of the trailer:
The trailer includes appearances from Erving himself, George Gervin, Charles Barkley, Larry Brown, Rick Barry, Bob Costas, Spencer Haywood, Walt Frazier, Chris Mullin and others.
The docuseries will put a spotlight on some of the ABA's best players, including Moses Malone, Gervin, Barry, George McGinnis and Haywood, but Erving will undoubtedly have a starring role.
After all, the story of the ABA cannot be told without devoting a significant amount of attention toward Dr. J.
"Dr. J gave the league credibility," Costas said in the trailer, while Gervin said, "We're getting ready to show you all, man, what y'all was missing."
In addition to the star power of the players, the league's rivalry with the NBA, social issues that extended beyond the court and the overall way the ABA helped shape modern-day basketball will also be explored and receive mentions in the trailer.
So does the creation of the three-pointer and the slam-dunk contest, which had quite the impact on the NBA.
In fact, it is nearly impossible to imagine the modern-day game without the three-pointer, as the space-and-pace era with players such as Stephen Curry launching from well beyond the arc has come to define the latest era of the sport.
It all traces back to the ABA, as does the addition of former ABA franchises such as the Brooklyn Nets, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, and San Antonio Spurs.
The docuseries fittingly premieres in 2026, which is the 50th anniversary of the ABA's merger with the NBA that helped create the game so many fans love today.
