Novak Djokovic Teases Retirement Timeline on Video After Loss to Carlos Alcaraz at Australian Open
Novak Djokovic left his future open-ended after losing in the men's singles final of the 2026 Australian Open.
Djokovic's quest for a 25th career Grand Slam title came up short as Carlos Alcaraz bested him in four sets. At the end of his runner-up speech, he thanked the crowd for their support during the tournament. He then alluded to how his career may not have a lot of time left.
"God knows what happens tomorrow, let alone in six months or 12 months," Djokovic said. "It has been a great ride. I love you guys."

Beyond the fact he continues to play at a high level, the pursuit of history is likely fueling the 38-year-old. One more major title will move him ahead of Margaret Court for the most all time by a singles player.
Djokovic isn't getting any younger, though, and he may come to feel the pursuit of another record is increasingly futile.
Alacarz and Jannik Sinner have now split the last nine Grand Slam titles. They're dominating the sport in the exact same way the trio of Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal did.
This year's Australian Open perfectly encapsulated the challenge standing before the Djoker. He bested Sinner in an epic five-setter in the semifinals, only to run into Alcaraz in the final. This the fourth straight major tournament in which Sinner or Alcaraz sent Djokovic packing.
There's no shame in being the third-best player in the world, and that increasingly seems like the Serbian star's ceiling.
Given the physical demands required of even playing a lighter schedule, nobody will be shocked if Djokovic signals at some point this will be the last season in his legendary career.
