Wemby, Spurs Impress Fans with Win vs. Kevin Durant, Rockets amid NBA Playoff Race
Everybody in the NBA is looking up at the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder. The San Antonio Spurs looked like the team most likely to catch them on Wednesday night.
In a clash of Western Conference contenders, Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs (32-15) knocked off the Houston Rockets, 111-99, sealing the win by outscoring the Rockets 27-13 in the fourth quarter.
Wemby was fantastic, putting up 28 points, 16 boards and five blocks, while rookie Dylan Harper added 16 points.
Amen Thompson (25 points, seven rebounds) and Kevin Durant (24 points, six assists) led the way for Houston (28-17), and Durant set another career milestone in the process.
But the night belonged to Wemby and the Spurs, and NBA fans and pundits gassed them up after the win:
The Spurs took the defensive effort to another level in the second half, holding the Rockets to just 37 points in the final two quarters. Wemby scored as many points himself in the four quarter (13) as the Rockets.
The Spurs are young and don't have nearly the playoff experience of the other contenders in the Western Conference. But with Wemby and the defensive intensity they showcased on Wednesday, they'll give any team a run for its money.
Including the Thunder.
