Biggest Questions Surrounding 2026 NFL Season After the Draft 🤔
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Schwartz was "visibly upset" after the decision and told other coaches "he's not coming back."
Garrett is one of several players on Cleveland's defense that has a "strong affinity for Schwartz," according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport noted that Schwartz is still under contract with the Browns and they'd like to retain him, but he "may have other plans."
The 59-year-old has served as Cleveland's defensive coordinator since 2023.
While Garrett already established himself as one of the NFL's most imposing pass-rushers prior to the arrival of Schwartz, he became even more productive following the coaching change.
Garrett earned his first Defensive Player of the Year award in 2023 before amassing a league-leading 22 tackles for loss in 2024. In 17 games during his 2025 campaign, he set a new NFL single-season record with 23 sacks.
Garrett praised Schwartz's leadership style at the end of the 2025 season.
"To play for Jim has been an honor and a privilege," Garrett said, per Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. "He's a great coach. He's a great man of character and a great leader. So I just appreciate the fact that I've been coached by him and it has helped elevate my game and take it to the heights we see now."
The Browns finished with a 5-12 record in 2025 but their defense was a bright spot, as they ranked No. 4 among all teams by allowing just 283.6 total yards per game.
With Schwartz's future in Cleveland now uncertain, Garrett doesn't appear to be pleased.
