Jim Schwartz Reportedly 'Said Goodbyes' to Browns, Was 'Visibly Upset' After Todd Monken Hire

Joseph ZuckerJan 28, 2026

Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz might be out the door after the team hired Todd Monken as its head coach, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Pelissero reported that Schwartz, who was one of three finalists, "was visibly upset, said goodbyes in the building and told other coaches he's not coming back." Opposing teams might be ready to pounce if he leaves, too.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz cited a source who said the experienced coach could press the issue if the Browns try to block his exit.

"If it has to get ugly, Schwartz is someone who will be perfectly fine making it ugly," the source said.

Schwartz wasn't the widely held favorite to replace Kevin Stefanski as head coach, so the selection of Monken didn't come as a complete shock.

The 59-year-old coached the Detroit Lions for five seasons and compiled a 29-51 record. The fact he hasn't gotten a second crack at a head coaching job despite consistently leading solid defenses could perhaps be telling as to his reputation around the NFL.

For Cleveland, targeting an offensive-minded coach also made sense when its future hinges so much on developing a young quarterback, be it Shedeur Sanders or a different prospect.

Still, the Monken era won't be off to a great start if it comes at the cost of Schwartz.

The Browns allowed the fewest yards in 2023 and ranked fourth in 2025. Defense has been their hallmark the last few years, and that might change with a new coordinator in charge.

Star pass-rusher Myles Garrett, who requested a trade last offseason, in particular may not like the idea of playing for a different DC as the organization's rebuild continues.

Maybe Monken can convince Schwartz to stick around, in which case this situation would help him make an immediate impression on the locker room.
