Kevin Durant Responds to Fans Who Shared Fake Quote Criticizing Rockets, 'Did U Let The Bait Get U?'

Adam WellsJan 23, 2026

Living in a social media world where fake quotes make the rounds frequently, Kevin Durant is trying to keep people honest when they get sucked in by incorrect material.

After a fake quote was attributed to Durant following the Houston Rockets' 128-122 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday, the 15-time All-Star responded to fans on X by asking, "U truly believe I said this or did u let the bait get u??"

The fake quote read, "I don't get it. I gotta go get 35 so we can stay close to even winning just to lose. We not this mediocre. We need a change man, need it now."

There are a lot of reasons that doesn't make sense being attributed to Durant, not least of which is he has never been one to vocally complain about his teams while he is playing for them.

Durant didย accuseย the Phoenix Suns of scapegoating him for their struggles last season, but that came earlier this month after he helped the Rockets defeat his former club.

Even during his final season with the Golden State Warriors when it seemed like everything was chaos, Durant remained complimentary of them after he left in the summer of 2019 to sign with the Brooklyn Nets.

The closest Durant came to saying anything negative in public about his Warriors teammates was tellingย J.R. Moehringerย of theย Wall Street Journalย that he never felt fully at home there because, unlike Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, he wasn't drafted by the organization.

As for the present day, it's not like Durant is having to carry a Rockets team that is merely trying to get by in the West. They had won three straight games prior to Thursday, including victories over the Minnesota Timberwolves and San Antonio Spurs.

Durant did put forth a terrific effort against the Sixers with 36 points on 13-of-21 shooting in 44 minutes.

Despite the loss, the Rockets (26-16) are in fourth place in the Western Conference. The schedule-makers didn't do them any favors, as they will play in Detroit for the second night of a back-to-back on Friday against the East-leading Pistons.
