Fans were impressed with the performances of Maxey and Embiid.
The game was a hard-fought battle, as neither team held a double-digit lead at any point during the contest.
Houston led Philadelphia 34-32 at the end of the first quarter, but the 76ers outscored the Rockets 36-27 in the second to take a seven-point lead into halftime.
It didn't take long for Houston to respond in the third quarter, opening the period on an 8-2 run to remain within striking distance.
The Rockets kept pace with the 76ers heading into the fourth quarter and eventually took a 110-103 lead with just over three minutes remaining in regulation.
Philadelphia eventually went on a 10-3 run of its own to tie the contest, with Maxey responsible for seven points over that stretch.
Durant buried a short jumper to put Houston up by two points, but Maxey tied the game again with a driving layup off a steal by Paul George.
He had another opportunity to win the game with time winding down in the fourth, although his layup attempt resulted in a controversial play that was ruled a block by Durant.
The contest eventually headed to overtime.
George quickly put Philadelphia back on top with a three-pointer to begin the extra period before a layup from VJ Edgecombe gave the team a five-point edge.
Durant responded with a triple of his own before Amen Thompson tied the game with a layup, but a pair of buckets from Maxey and Kelly Oubre Jr. put the 76ers up by two scores once again.
A floater from Durant eventually pulled the Rockets to within two points as 23 seconds remained in overtime, but Maxey connected on a pair of free throws to seal the victory before his final two-handed slam.
George only scored 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting, but his all-around impact was felt. He racked up six rebounds, four assists, three steals and one block.
The 76ers were able to secure the win largely due to their impressive ball movement, amassing a season-high 41 assists compared to just 15 turnovers.
