Kyle Tucker Explains Why He Signed Dodgers Contract in MLB Free Agency, Discusses Fit on Roster

The Los Angeles Dodgers introduced outfielder Kyle Tucker on Wednesday.

While making the rounds with media, Tucker spoke with Dodgers reporter and host Kirsten Watson of SportsNet LA and explained why he felt the Dodgers were the right fit.

"...There's a lot of really good organizations out there that do a really good job and have really good teams, and the more I kind of talked things over with the front office and the coaching staff and everything, I just thought it would be a really good fit. Like I said, this team speaks for itself with the roster the front office has put together, and they've done really good job at that. And then, you know, I think it would be a lot of fun living out here as well. So when you kind of factor all that into each other and I thought it would be a great landing spot for me and my family, so I'm excited to get things going."

The Dodgers signed Tucker to a four-year, $240 million deal, and the three-time All-Star now joins a back-to-back World Series champion looking like the strong favorite for the first three-peat in MLB since the 1998-2000 New York Yankees pulled it off more than a quarter-century ago.

Tucker was asked about what he learned from his previous World Series-winning experience from 2022 with the Houston Astros and how he can bring that to the table as the Dodgers go for three in a row.

"I mean, obviously, things got to work out. As long as you can stay healthy and have a good year and as long as you can get to the playoffs, anything can happen. So, I mean, if you're in it together with a group of guys and you're supporting each other and kind of just taking care of each other, whether it's on defense making a play for the pitcher to get out of an inning, or prevent a guy from getting a double, keeping him at first, or stop him from going first to third. Like, little things like that can really uplift each other, even though it might not show up in a stat sheet, but the players and the clubhouse definitely recognizes little things like that, and it just makes you want to play harder for each other and go out there and try win games. So I'm excited to do my part."

Tucker joins a Dodger team that is loaded with high-priced talent, including 2025 NL MVP Shohei Ohtani, 2025 World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto and a few future Hall of Famers in Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman.

Per FanGraphs, the Dodgers' estimated 2026 payroll is $429 million, well over the next-highest team, the New York Mets ($356 million). L.A. certainly hasn't been shy about adding the best talent available no matter the cost. Tucker isn't exception to that rule, but it appears MLB owners aren't happy about the move.

In fact, Evan Drellich of The Athletic reported that owners are "enraged" by the team and will push for a salary cap no matter what in negotiations for the next collective bargaining agreement (the current CBA expires after this season).

"These guys are going to go for a cap no matter what it takes," a source told Drellich, who also noted that "owner frustration reached a boiling point" following the Tucker move.

Tucker was asked about owners wanting a salary cap following his deal, and he had this to say.

As far as the upcoming season goes, it appears Tucker will play right field and hit in the top third of the order, per manager Dave Roberts to reporters on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old most recently posted an .841 OPS (.266 batting average) while amassing 22 home runs and 73 RBI in 136 games for the 2025 Chicago Cubs. He showed off his speed with 25 stolen bases alongside 91 runs.

Tucker is entering his ninth MLB season. He's hit .273 (.865 OPS) lifetime with a per-162 game average of 31 home runs and 103 RBI.

He'll make his Dodger debut on March 26 when Los Angeles hosts the Arizona Diamondbacks.
