Gerrit Cole's Box Score Stats, Reaction from Rough Yankees vs. Mets Outing amid Continued Struggles

New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole has now allowed seven home runs over his last two starts after a rough outing against the New York Mets on Saturday afternoon.

The Mets hit homers in the first, second and third innings courtesy of shortstop Francisco Lindor, Luis Torrens and Carson Benge, respectively. Lindor and Benge hit solo shots, while Torrens smacked a two-run, two-out homer.

Cole got into trouble in the fifth, allowing an RBI double to Benge to put the Yankees in a 5-1 hole, and was swiftly yanked by manager Aaron Boone.

Last Sunday against the San Diego Padres, Cole began his start by allowing back-to-back-to-back home runs to Fernando Tatis Jr., Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado. He later gave up a solo homer to Jorge Campusano in the seventh inning en route to a 4-3 loss.

All told, Cole gave up these seven homers in a span of 9.1 innings pitched.

The 36-year-old Cole is a six-time All-Star, two-time American League ERA leader and one-time AL Cy Young winner (2023). He missed all of 2025 after undergoing Tommy John surgery and returned on May 22.

Cole got his season off to a great start, throwing 12.2 shutout innings over a pair of starts against the Tampa Bay Rays and Kansas City Royals.

However, it's been an up-and-down campaign ever since.

Cole endured a tough nine-game stretch in which he allowed 11 home runs en route to a 4.93 ERA.

He fared a lot better over his next six starts (1.96 ERA) while allowing just two home runs and striking out 39 batters (vs. just nine walks).

September has been a rough go, though. Cole first labored through a start against the last-place Los Angeles Angels, allowing three earned runs and eight hits in 5.1 innings. Now he's struggled mightily against the Padres and Mets, who have done quite well against Cole as a Yankee.

Cole's next turn in the rotation is set for Friday at the Arizona Diamondbacks.
