Warriors' Top NBA Trade Targets to Pair With Stephen Curry After Jimmy Butler's Knee Injury

Andrew PetersJan 20, 2026

The Golden State Warriors are in a bind after losing star forward Jimmy Butler to a torn ACL on Monday.

The good news for Golden State is that the injury to Butler came before the Feb. 5 trade deadline, meaning the Warriors have some time to add to the roster and give Stephen Curry some support.

ESPN's Bobby Marks broke down some of the Warriors' options ahead of the deadline, noting that the team could bring the disgruntled Jonathan Kuminga back into the rotation. He also said if Golden State opts to trade Kuminga, DeMar DeRozan of the Sacramento Kings could be an option.

ESPN's Shams Charania noted on NBA Today that the Kings, along with the Dallas Mavericks, have shown interest in Kuminga.

"We know Sacramento and Dallas are two teams with interest in Jonathan Kuminga right now," Charania said (h/t Real GM). "There's other teams as well. But you look at Sacramento: is there a player like Zach LaVine or DeMar DeRozan that you can bring in and can help in the immediate future without Jimmy Butler."

Another option aside from LaVine or DeRozan could be Brooklyn Nets breakout star Michael Porter Jr. The Nets are still fully in rebuild mode, so it could be worth sending Porter to Golden State in return for some picks.

The Warriors have in the past shown interest in Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen. If they want to make a splash at the deadline this year, they could make another run at him to add some offense alongside Curry.

Golden State had a rough start to the year, but has managed to turn things around a bit. The Warriors are currently sitting in eighth place in the West at 25-19, and they'll hope to avoid taking a major step back with the loss of Butler.
