NBA Trade Rumors on Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan, Kings' Deadline Plans

Mike ChiariJan 16, 2026

The Sacramento Kings are reportedly open to moving multiple big names prior to the Feb. 5 NBA trade deadline, including center Domantas Sabonis and forward DeMar DeRozan.

According to ESPN's Anthony Slater, Sabonis is a "name to watch" leading up to the deadline, as Kings general manager Scott Perry is "open to discussing trades for all their high-priced veterans."

Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that the Kings and Los Angeles Clippers had "exploratory conversations" about a trade that would have sent DeRozan and guard Keon Ellis to L.A. for forward John Collins and salary filler, but the Clips have since won 11 of their past 13 games, perhaps putting those talks on hold.

A rebuild seems to be in the Kings' best interests since they currently have the second-worst record in the Western Conference at 11-30.

In 2022-23, the Kings reached the playoffs for the first time since the 2005-06 season, but it was short-lived, as they were eliminated in the first round.

The Kings missed the playoffs the following season despite going 46-36, and they were out of the postseason again last season with a 40-42 mark.

Sacramento began the process of reshaping its roster last season when it traded guard De'Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs, and the likes of Sabonis, DeRozan and Zach LaVine have been the subject of trade rumors ever since.

Sabonis, 29, is in the midst of his 10th NBA season overall and his fifth with the Kings. The three-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA selection is one of the most versatile and productive bigs in the league, averaging 19.2 points, 12.8 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game, while shooting 57.4 percent from the field over the past seven seasons.

He has been limited to 11 games this season due to a partially torn meniscus in his left knee, but Sabonis is slated to return from a 27-game absence against the Washington Wizards on Friday, per Slater.

Sabonis has three years and $136.3 million left on his contract, so any team that trades for him would be making a sizable financial commitment.

The opposite is true of the 36-year-old DeRozan, who is only signed through next season at a salary of $25.74 million.

A 17-year veteran who previously played for the Toronto Raptors, San Antonio Spurs and Chicago Bulls, DeRozan is in the midst of his second season in Sacramento.

The six-time All-Star and three-time All-NBA selection remains a highly productive player, averaging 19.1 points on 50.8 percent shooting to go along with 3.9 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game this season.

DeRozan has yet to miss a game this season, and durability is among his greatest strengths, as he played in 74 or more games in four straight seasons entering the 2025-26 campaign.

Given his production, health and contract status, DeRozan shouldn't be tough to move, and he could be the ideal No. 3 scoring option on a contending team.
