Victor Wembanyama 'Confident' He Can Break World Record After Viral Video of High Kick
After a viral moment earlier this week in which he was able to kick a net stuffed with basketballs, Victor Wembanyama believes he can set a world record for high kicking if he gets the opportunity.
Speaking to The Athletic's Jared Weiss, Wembanyama said he's entirely "confident" he could break the current high-kick record.
Wembanyama showed off his kicking skills during pregame warmups before the San Antonio Spurs game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday.
The official Guinness World Record for the highest unassisted martial arts kick by a male is 2.94 meters (approximately 9.65 feet), accomplished by Jessie Frankson in December 2000.
However, Weiss noted the unofficial record belongs to Kadour Ziani at 9'9" when he appeared on The Best Damn Sports Show Period in 2007.
Weiss added there's a connection between Wembanyama and Ziani, who has done work with Ben Patrick. Patrick is a key figure in the Knees Over Toes training philosophy to help build knee strength.
According to Weiss, Wembanyama's trainer, Guillaume Alquier, has been using the program with the Spurs superstar to help him build up his leg strength and flexibility.
Even though the Spurs may not want to see Wembanyama trying to kick the ball out of the basket on a regular basis because of the pressure it might put on his knees, but his highlight from Tuesday suggests he may not need many opportunities to break either the official or unofficial record.
