The Wizards announced on Friday they have finalized the deal to acquire Young from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert.
"We are excited to welcome Trae Young to the Washington Wizards," general manager Will Dawkins said in the announcement. "It is a rare opportunity to acquire a player of Trae's skill, accomplishments, and age. Trae plays an exciting brand of basketball and brings a level of confidence and competitiveness that has set him apart in this league."
Young's new jersey number adds another connection to the trade since McCollum also used No. 3 during his brief tenure in Washington. He had worn the No. 11 for his entire NBA career with the Hawks, but the Wizards retired that number in 1981 in honor of Hall of Famer Elvin Hayes.
Of course, No. 3 is notable among Wizards fans for being Bradley Beal's jersey number during his 11-year stint with the organization. He made three All-Star appearances as a member of the Wizards.
Beal is one of two players who scored at least 15,000 career points while playing for the Wizards. Hayes is their all-time leading scorer with 15,551 points.
Young will become the 17th different player in Wizards history to use No. 3. Beal, Rex Chapman, Laron Profit, Juan Dixon and Caron Butler are the only members from that group who wore it for more than one season.
It remains unclear when Young will make his Wizards debut. He sat out the last six games with the Hawks due to a right quad contusion and has only appeared in 10 games all season.
The Wizards have won four of their last seven games, but they remain near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings with a 10-26 overall record.
