Fresh Trae Young Rumors on New Wizards Contract After Hawks Trade

Adam WellsJan 9, 2026

As Trae Young prepares to enter the next phase of his career with the Washington Wizards, the four-time All-Star could be in line to sign a new contract at some point.

Per ESPN's Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps, the "strong expectation" around the NBA is that Young and Washington will work out an extension.

In a post on X, Young expressed gratitude for "another opportunity" that awaits him with the Wizards.

It will be interesting to see the terms of Young's next deal because he is currently playing on a five-year max extension that was signed with the Atlanta Hawks in August 2021.

Per ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, even though both sides are open to an extension, it is not "top of mind" for either the Wizards or Young because they want to evaluate his fit with their roster before making any firm decisions.

The Hawks and Young couldn't agree to terms when he was eligible for a new deal in the offseason.

Considering the Wizards were able to get Young in a deal for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert with no draft picks going to Atlanta, it doesn't seem like his value is particularly high right now.

Young will make $49 million next season if he opts in to the final year of his current contract. ESPN's Bobby Marks noted he is eligible to sign an extension for up to three years.

The Wizards have no reason to rush into a deal given the current state of their roster, along with trying to keep their top-eight protected first-round pick in the 2026 draft.

Given how limited the market seems for Young, it would be a surprise if he turned down his player option for 2026-27, so that gives the Wizards an extended runway to see how he fits in with a young, rebuilding team.
