Trae Young Trade Rumors Reveal Timeline for Potential Deal, More on Wizards Links

Julia StumbaughJan 7, 2026

The Washington Wizards' reported bid to acquire Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks may take up until the Feb. 5 trade deadline, NBA insider Jake Fischer reported Wednesday.

According to Fischer, the Hawks have had "serious discussions" with the Wizards about trading for Young, but are waiting to see if any other teams are interested in a potential deal.

"So far, though, it has been difficult to confirm another team in active pursuit of Young," Fischer wrote.

According to Fischer, the Wizards' interest in Young dates back to at least last offseason.

Fischer reported back in August the Hawks had "no plans" to discuss an extension with Young over the summer.

He is now playing in the final guaranteed year of his contract and has yet to decide on a player option worth just under $49 million for 2026-27, per Spotrac.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Monday that Young and his representatives were working with the Hawks on a trade.

Charania wrote at the time that Hawks general manager Onsi Saleh and Young's camp were having "positive and collaborative talks over the past week on finding a resolution."

Young has been limited to just 10 games this season amid multiple injuries, including an MCL sprain that sidelined him for 22 straight games between late October and mid-December.

Trade rumors had already surrounded Young since the Hawks' decision not to extend him this summer.

Those rumors increased when the Hawks went 13-9 without Young over that stretch, during which Jalen Johnson averaged 23.2 points and 11.2 rebounds per game.

Young has most recently been sidelined for five games with a quad contusion that had him listed as questionable for Wednesday night's matchup with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Even when available, Young's production has been down. He's averaging 19.3 points and 8.9 assists while averaging 28 minutes on the court.

He could hope to bounce back with a change of scenery and a healthier back half of the season, while the Wizards could hope to take the next step forward in their ongoing rebuild by adding an established point guard to their young roster.

Young is playing this season under a cap hit of just under $46 million, per Spotrac. The Wizards have two major expiring contracts for Khris Middleton ($33.3 million) and C.J. McCollum ($30.6 million), either of which could potentially help the franchise send out enough money to match Young's deal in a potential trade.

Washington also holds two first-round picks in the upcoming draft, including the Oklahoma City Thunder's 2026 first-rounder. Should Young leave Atlanta, the Hawks could hope to acquire some draft capital to get help building around Johnson going forward.

For now, it sounds like whether the Wizards are ultimately successful in acquiring Young will depend on if any other teams express interest in him. The Hawks may be hoping Young will be able to return to the lineup and increase his value before the trade window closes in less than a month.
